Visting--and a Phone Call from Sam and Cate

Our morning walk took us up to the Black Jack group camp area. On the way, we noticed that we were walking uphill--that is, our legs noticed! Ken said, "We've been in flat land too long." On the way up the hill, we heard a roaring engine and looked to see a pickup pulling a long Alpine fifth wheel just slamming up the hill. When we talked to the driver later, he said that he needed to keep up his momentum to make it up the hill (a sign, we think, that he may need a more powerful truck).

We walked around the group area, which is laid out as a wagon wheel, with a central area with picnic tables and a pavilion. Many of the campers belonged to the Dogwood Chapter of the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society. Tomorrow they will be presenting an introduction to the art of dutch oven cooking. I'm interested, but we have space and weight limitations.

Debbie came over with Christine, Robby, and Sam for a visit. We sat in the backyard and talked while the kids zoomed around, working off some youthful energy. Robby loves to play with his little brother, and Christine is very good with him too.

Carol pushed Sam on the swing set, which he obviously enjoyed a lot. He's a very happy, good-natured toddler. Carol, Debbie, Christine, and I played a few rounds of Boggle--a tradition when we get together. Christine is allowed to find three-letter words, but she has started to find several four-letter words each round too.

Dick and Carol went to Good Friday afternoon services, and Debbie headed home so the kids could rest. Ken and I went to Super1 Foods and got supplies for our picnic tomorrow. The park has an egg hunt at 2:00 p.m., and we'll eat afterwards. The kids are looking forward to the egg hunt.

Carol fixed salmon, sweet potatoes, and asparagus for dinner, with a spinach salad. We enjoyed everything. Afterwards Ken and I took a quick evening walk. Then we all watched a DVD of Alegria!, a Cirque du Soleil performance recorded in Sydney. That's the show we enjoyed so much when we attended with a group of friends in the Valley last year.

Watching the DVD brought back some great memories. It was a very different experience from the total immersion of the live performance, but we had some fine close up views of the characters, and the camera was able to provide some unique perspectives on the action. Some of the shots were bird's eye views. The performances stunned all of us--how could human beings do the spectacular things these athletes and actors did with such grace and panache?

During the show my phone rang, and I went to Carol's bedroom to take the call. It was Sam, very excited to tell me all about how he learned to ride his bike without training wheels today. He said he was scared at first, but not for long. Then Cate got on the phone. She was proud to tell me that she had also learned to ride without training wheels today. When I get to their house next week, I'll get some photos of their accomplishment to post in this blog.

When we got home we had lots of food and laundry to put away. We're tired after a long day.
