Checkout time at McKinney Falls State Park is at 2:00 p.m., and when I called this morning, the woman who answered advised that on Sundays, people did not generally leave early. So we decided to wait until 1:00 p.m. to give many campers a chance to check out before we arrived. That way we'd have a better selection of sites. Texas State Park camping reservations are not site specific, so you choose from what's available when you arrive.
In the meantime we drove to San Marcos to visit the outlet malls there. Last year the only thing we bought was some ginger wasabi sauce. This year we got a jar of wild Maine blueberry jam from the same kitchen store, Le Gourmet Chef. As usual we had fun checking out some of the stores, but didn't buy much. Living in a small space makes it easier to resist the temptation to pick up things.
When we got to McKinney Falls, one of our preferred sites was open, site #4. It took a bit of maneuvering to get in, because both ends of the drive have small culverts, but it's a very nice site, with a view of the southern sky for the Qube and some nice trees on our curb side.
Down the road just a bit we found a nice patch of bluebonnets. We haven't seen any fields full of bluebonnets yet, but there are some here and there.
We walked around the campground this evening. Although it was full last night, we have very few neighbors tonight. On our walk we spotted a pair of unusual birds up in a tree. They looked rather like water birds, but we haven't identified them. One flew off when we walked up, but the other held still, so Ken managed to get a couple of shots. The lighting wasn't good, and the bird wasn't very near, but you can clearly see the orange bill and legs.
Loretta will be coming to visit tomorrow. We had originally planned on Tuesday, but the weather report for Tuesday doesn't look very good, so we've shifted to tomorrow. We'll hike around the park and have a chance to talk.
