107° in the Shade

Good thing our air conditioning is working, that's all I can say!

We had a quiet day at home, walking before breakfast and later in the evening to avoid the worst of the heat wave. Ken had to go to the bike shop. He had bought a nifty USB rechargeable LED bike light, but it refused to charge. Bicycle Vibe traded it for a new one.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. Ken has an appointment to have his new permanent crown installed. I have some shopping to do before we head for Grand Canyon Village (which I suspect doesn't have any larger grocery stores). We're taking our laundry over to Jan's. She and Larry will be busy during the day, but they've graciously offered us the code to their garage door and the use of their laundry facilities and swimming pool. In the afternoon I will again join them in making sandwiches for their church's homeless ministry.

That reminds me that we watched a short movie called "Mr. Stink" today. We had recorded it last week. The film definitely has a holiday theme: it was first shown on the BBC just before Christmas 2012. It seems out of place in the middle of June. Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham, on Downton Abbey) makes a wonderful character actor as Mr. Stink,  a very rough homeless person. It turns out that he is actually Lord Darlington (and very rich) but has been wandering as a homeless person since his pregnant wife died in a fire. He blames himself for her death. Of course there's an appealing twelve year old girl, Chloe, who is the clear moral center of the story, and the ending is predictably upbeat (but really strains the willing suspension of disbelief!).

Both of us have been complaining of dry, brittle nails and dry skin in general. While we watched Mr. Stink,  we did our nails. I used the Gelish on my fingernail in the hope that it will slow the splitting.
