End of the World?

Today some say the Mayan calendar predicts the end of the world. Hey, any excuse for a party! We all got together at Jean's house this evening to celebrate our survival. John and Sandy have just recently arrived in the RGV, so we were very glad to see them.

We had a potluck, and Jean made delicious roast beef and roasted carrots. She had some interesting wine--Merlot in beer bottles. It turned out that her son had decided to brew some wine. Since he's a craft brewer, of course he has beer bottles--so.... The wine was delicious, and the party was great fun.

This afternoon the DirecTV tech showed up to check out our problems. After a bit we were able to convince him that the problem was not in our equipment but in the DVR. He replaced our receiver with an updated model HR24, which has the nice feature that it can use an RF signal for the remote, so we don't have to point at the IR repeater. He also gave us an Internet connection kit so the DVR can download movies via wifi and we can listen to Pandora and other features we haven't checked into yet.

Today is the 7th anniversary of one of the most terrible days of my life, the day my brother Joe died. I'm still having a hard time saying goodbye to him--and to Mom and Terry. I read something once that said that the only person that would be with you your whole life long is you. Everyone else in my life may come and go, and losing loved ones is part of everyone's life. A very painful part.
