Sacramento River Trail

We got the bikes down this morning and headed out on the Sacramento River Trail. We enjoyed biking it in 2009 when we were here. This time we followed the same route, first heading west on the north side of the river, which curves northward out to the ribbon bridge. We crossed the bridge and continued north on the to the Keswick Dam. This part of the trail runs concurrently with the Shasta Rail Trail.

Then we headed back, but we followed the trail west and south of the river back to the pedestrian bridge, where we crossed back and went home for lunch. After lunch we biked to the Sundial Bridge and crossed over to the Turtle Bay Bird Sanctuary. A couple of bald eagles started nesting nearby a few years ago. A binocular viewer is set up by the trail, and we think we saw the nest, but no activity.

Along the trail, each creek is marked by a sign that indicates its name and has the slogan "Protect Our Waterways." This one caught my attention.

The trail is very well kept and very well used. We passed many other cyclists, dog walkers, skateboarders, and others. Benches are placed along the trail, and some folks were just sitting watching the river. It's a wonderful resource. The part of the trail near the Elks Lodge runs past a large recreation complex with a water amusement park and the Exploratorium and Arboretum and Botanical Gardens.

Tomorrow we'll head north again. We're planning to visit a SKP COOP park in Sutherlin, OR. We haven't been there before. The last time we traveled this way, we drove west from Redding to visit the coast. It was at an RV park on Hwy 299 going west that Sweetie got lost. That was a really harrowing event, and a sad memory.
