Back to High School?

We started our day very early, practically the middle of the night for us. Our alarm went off at 3:45 a.m., and we arrived at Nikki Rowe High School at 4:50 a.m., prepared to wait in line until 8:00 a.m. That's when tickets for this year's musical, Annie Get Your Gun, went on sale.

Our vigil started outside, in the dark. Twenty-one people were ahead of us in line. Following Jan and Steve's tips, we took our chairs, thermos of coffee, fruit, and books, which made the wait more comfortable. We had some brief excitement when the lady just behind us in line suddenly collapsed and was unresponsive for a while. Someone called the paramedics, who checked her out and decided not to transport her. By that time she was talking and said that she had had this kind of fainting spell since childhood. We were sure glad to see that she was okay.

At 6:00 a.m., someone showed up to let us into the building. The line formed along one wall and then wrapped around. We were in the first section, sitting on cold, hard, built-in tile benches. Later arrivals sat in folding chairs.

We chatted with our neighbors and with Carol Biard, a fellow squre dancer. As the time neared 8:00 a.m., students started arriving, many carrying musical instruments. We marveled at how young they were.

Finally 8:00 a.m. came and people started to move. The process was remarkably fast and well organized. We were out with tickets in hand by 8:15 a.m. We headed home. I was chilled to the bone and very tired. At home we ate our oatmeal with a cup of hot chocolate, and then I turned in for a nap.

Afterward we biked around the park, stopping to talk with Jan and Steve and company. They had stripped the tangelo tree and handed us a nice bag full of the delicious fruit. Steve, Cheryl, and Curt went fishing yesterday, and they all reported that it had been a great day for fishing.

We went to Darryl's afternoon C-1 workshop, where we had fun dancing and chatting with friends. We distributed some of the tickets we bought this morning (and being reimbursed). Darryl played around with (anything) It Off, Lee Koppman's new call.

After the dance we went shopping and didn't get home until after 6:00 p.m. It was dark, and we put our food away and heated up some leftovers for dinner. We're both really tired and will try to go to bed early tonight.
