Another Great Day at the Coast

This morning started off with a breakfast of great blueberry pancakes Sandy made for us. Afterward Shawn drove us south to do some sightseeing. Our first stop was the Freed Gallery in Lincoln City, where Sandy and Ken display their art. We saw some beautiful pieces in a variety of media. Photographs by Kirk Jonasson really caught my eye, especially after I realized that they were not cropped or otherwise manipulated in the darkroom or on a computer.

Our next stop was at Boiler Bay where we got a glimpse of a whale spout. It was windy and cold so we moved on southward along the ocean, stopping at the whale watching center at Depoe Bay. We didn't spot any whales there: they saw five yesterday and had seen one today, so this is obviously not the prime whale watching season. Then Shawn drove us down to the Devil's Punch Bowl, which was impressive even though it was pretty near low tide. The ocean is just fascinating.

Walking on the beach

On the way back north we stopped at a kite shop, where Ken picked up a kite that will fly at wind speeds from 4 mph to 40 mph. If wind conditions don't favor his two-line stunt kite, then he'll have an alternative. We stopped at another small gallery and at Walgreens, where Chris hoped to find some Pseudoephedrine. It turned out that in Oregon, a doctor's prescription is required, so no joy.

Then we met Shawn's mother at the Pelican Pub and Brewery in Pacific City. It's right on the beach, with a good view of the impressive Haystack Rock. Unfortunately the view of the beach was obscured by a long line of vehicles parked along the water's edge. The food was delicious, especially the house salad, and their beer was award winning. Our next stop was Shawn's sister's house.

We met Jack and Sandra (Shawn's sister) and their two puppies. From Anara's point of view, the puppies were the most important. They are really cute, small and furry beagle and terrier mix. They're very sociable and glad to lick anyone who holds them. We got a tour of the house, which has dramatic views of the ocean. Sandra acted as general contractor during the year it was being built, and they are justifiably proud of their unique home.

When we got back to the house, Ken Dust was there, home from his fishing trip with a bunch of crabs and a couple of unusual fish. We finally got to eat the apple pie that Sandy had made. Everyone pronounced it delicious and the crust flaky and tender. Then we gathered up all our stuff and headed back to Portland.

Chris has a cold and has been feeling pretty miserable, so Shawn drove home. She is so familiar with the route that she feels comfortable with the winding narrow road. We came upon a serious auto accident that had evidently just happened, since no emergency vehicles were in sight. One of the cars involved had lost at least a couple of wheels. We hope no one was too seriously injured. We also got stuck waiting for a very long, slow train. Finally we made it back to the duplex, where we packed up and said goodbye until tomorrow morning.
