Wow! It's July already, and only a week before our Alaska cruise. But first we have to regroup and rest after a very hectic five days of travel and square dancing. This morning we said our goodbyes to our friends the Evans and Wes Johnsons. They were on the road to Olympia today to visit Tom and Nanci, so they wanted to leave by 9:00 a.m. We got one last hug and asked a neighbor to take some photos.
Then we walked around the fairgrounds and explored a bit. We found to our surprise that the fairgrounds houses the trains and memorabilia of a group called the Inland Empire Steam and Gas Buffs.
We also found plenty of horses and owners there for a horse show. This beautiful horse with a braided tail caught my eye, and I seem to have caught his too.
Our destination today was the Spokane Valley Elks Lodge--the same place we spent last Monday night. We needed to do our laundry and grocery shopping and fuel up. We also bought our first containers of DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) from O'Reilly's. Right next to the filler hole for diesel we have another opening for DEF. It's essential to the proper operation of the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system, which reduces NO in diesel exhaust. It's required for almost all new diesel engines because manufacturers have decided that SCR is the best way to meet EPA emissions standards.
Tomorrow when we leave the Elks we will dump our tanks and find a propane supplier to fill our almost empty 40 lb. propane bottle. Then we'll head towards a BLM area north of Yakima to settle down and rest for a few days.
I baked a beer can chicken in my new oven today. It came out moist and tender as always. I also discovered that the oven is very easy to clean because it comes apart. The shelves slide into side rails which are supported in place by small hooks near the top and bottom. Once the shelves are removed, the rails can be removed. Then the oven floor can also be removed for cleaning. How convenient!
Annie was supposed to fly back to Portland from Texas today, but her flight was cancelled, so she'll be flying tomorrow. Meanwhile she's staying with Ed (Julie and the kids have already headed to Georgia). Ed will have to take time off work to take Annie to the airport, and Chris will have to take time off to pick Annie up at the airport. They are none too happy with Delta, which screwed up and did not cooperate by sending Annie home on a different airline.
