Juneau, AK and Mendenhall Glacier [draft]

Today is our first shore excursion. We docked in Juneau, the capitol of Alaska, at 2:00 p.m. and headed toward the gangplank, along with crowds of other folks trying to get ashore. We were all delayed by an evacuation of a person with a medical emergency.

Once we reached the shore, we looked for a shuttle to the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center (located in the Tongass National Forest). It turned out there were several, all for $8 per person each way--still way cheaper than the shore excursion offered by the cruise line. The only problem was that the latest return shuttle left the glacier at 6:00 p.m., so our time at the glacier was limited.

We hiked the easy Nugget Falls trail to a great vantage point near the base of the thundering falls.

The sandy area was also a good place to see the glacier:

We were back at the ship in plenty of time to have dinner in the Summer Palace.
