The Flume Gorge

This morning we packed a lunch and went to the Flume Gorge, which is a natural wonder, a gorge carved along a basalt dike through the Conway granite that forms most of the landscape here. The basalt, which is softer and more easily worn away, came from volcanic magma pushing its way up into cracks in the granite.

In addition to the gorge itself, created by the Flume Brook, we also saw the Avalanche Falls and the Pool, a deep area in the Pemi River, and enjoyed the walk through the forest.

We went to the Lafayette Campground to look around and eat our lunch, and then we decided to go home to take Sweetie out and regroup. The morning had started bright and sunny, but by early afternoon the clouds were gathering and it was cooling.

After an hour or two, the sun was back out and we decided to do the scenic drive along Hwy 112, the Kancamagus Highway, between Lincoln and Conway. Along the way we saw some nice little waterfalls. The best was the Sabaday Falls, a short hike in to a real treasure of a small falls.

We stopped at Lily Pond on the way home, hoping to see some moose. So far those creatures have eluded us--except for a very large stuffed one in the lobby of the Flume Gorge Visitor Center.

We paid for two more nights, so we're set for tomorrow.
