Montreal Rush Hour

After spending some time this morning researching, we decided that it would be best to head on towards Vermont. Unfortunately our route took us through Montreal, and even worse, it was rush hour. What should have been a comfortable 2 1/2 hour trip turned into almost five hours, much of which was spent in stop and go traffic trying to interpret unfamiliar signs on Montreal's freeways.

We made it to Saint Jean Sur Richelieu, just south of Montreal, where we are staying at a campground called Camping Les Cedres. "Camping" is evidently French for "campground." They tried to charge us $6 extra for Sweetie, and when we staged a revolt and threatened to leave, they relented, so we are paying only $36.57 for the privilege of parking here. We have plenty of room and it's fairly quiet, but otherwise it's not particularly appealing. We were probably lucky to get in for the night, since everything seems to be full for "the long weekend." That's what everyone here calls Labor Day Weekend (in Canada, Labour Day Weekend). Do they have only one long weekend a year?

Tomorrow we will cross the border into the USA, so tonight we rounded up all our contraband (oranges, apples from Chile, a sweet potato). We'll need to cook or eat everything or get it confiscated. At least this time I was forewarned, so we don't have much. Last time several grapefruits were trashed, so this time I was careful to avoid buying too much.
