In the Footsteps of Thoreau

After doing our laundry this morning, we decided to explore a little of our surroundings. First we stopped at the Visitor Center at the Flume Gorge, where we watched a short video about the Gorge and the sad demise of the Old Man of the Mountain.

Then we drove to the Basin, where a short walk took us to a large river pothole in the Pemi that Thoreau once wrote about. Wow, we're standing on the spot where Thoreau once stood! The Basin was carved out of granite by the swirling water and is 20 feet across. If you look closely, you can recognize the rock formation at the outlet of the Basin as "The Old Man's Foot."

Then we hiked further up the Cascade Trail to Kinsman Falls. At least the signs indicated that we were on a trail, and some trees along the way had painted stripes indicating a trail, but otherwise it looked like no trail we have ever been on. Gnarled and twisted roots crisscrossed the path and provided footholds as we climbed up the mountain--like a trail out of Sleepy Hollow.

Trail--see the blue paint stripe on the tree on the left?

Earlier today we got a surprise call from our friends Judy and Mike Simington. They are staying near Boston--at Womapatuck State Park--in the very campground where we are going next. They're traveling with their friends Sharon and Jim. Mike is planning on attending an Angels game in Boston early in the week, but it looks like they may have left the area by the time we get there.

Ken TIVOed the Michigan-Notre Dame game, so we watched it when we got home. Notre Dame was ranked #18 in the country, and Michigan not ranked at all, so Ken's expectations were not high, but the game was quite exciting, with the lead alternating between the two teams. And of course Michigan won in the last 11 seconds--yeah team!
