Small Town Friendliness

We made a trip into Carthage today. First we had to pick up our mail at the post office, where the clerk was very friendly and helpful, getting our mail right away and handing it to us with a smile.

Then we went on to Walmart to stock up on groceries and get some Ivarest for my rash. We had a problem with the price of the cantaloupe. On the shelf it was marked 88 cents, but it rang up $1.88. When I said something, the clerk called a produce manager over. He cheerfully went to check and came back to report that someone had removed the $1 from the sign but to give us the melon for 88 cents. We are so used to indifferent and rude clerks that this friendly professional treatment was a pleasant surprise.

The park is continuing to empty out. All the spaces around us are unoccupied now, so we have a great view again. On our walk tonight we sat on a bench and just enjoyed the lake for a while, listening to the wavelets lapping on the shore and the fish jumping.

The rash on my feet and legs continues to drive me crazy and make it difficult to walk, but I refuse to be slowed down too much. We did decide to wait another day before attempting the rest of our hike of the Bearwaller Gap Trail.

We watched another hour of Ken Burns' Prohibition tonight and then left the TIVO to finish recording the second hour because I was falling asleep watching. I had to get up and move around.

We called a couple of places in the Dallas area today to see about getting our bedroom slide rebuilt. No dice--everyone is overbooked. So we got in touch with Jan and Steve. We remembered that they had a slide rebuilt in the Valley. They were pleaseed with the work, so we'll try to schedule the work when we arrive in the Valley. Fortunately we'll be able to stay in Steve and Jan's Texas room while the work is done. We also found out that they are planning to be in Paris, TX, for the TEXPACC in a couple of weeks. It will be a real reunion, since Hardy and Judy will be there too, and we're sure we'll know lots more folks too.
