On to Ruby's RV Park at Bryce Canyon

We had a bit longer drive today (105 miles), so we left the Kaibab Camper Village just after 10 a.m. and headed for Kanab, where we again visited Honey's Marketplace to stock up. We stopped for lunch in a parking lot at Carmel Junction. As we drove north on Hwy 89, we could see a waterway that looked like a canal snaking along beside the road. It was the Sevier River, which evidently serves as a source of irrigation and other water for a large area.

All along the route, the scenery was varied and dramatic, the kind that invites you to stop and admire it. When we turned east on Hwy 12, we noticed a hike and bike path paralleling the road. Our destination was Ruby's Inn RV Park and Campground, right outside Bryce Canyon National Park. We had an image in mind of Ruby as a welcoming hostess, but it turns out that the founder was named Reuben Syrett, but everyone called him Ruby. The inn was established in 1918, well before Bryce was designated a national park in 1928.

The campground offers full hookups and has lots of large pine trees that offer some shade, but the sites are rather narrow. Dennis and Cheryl set up facing us, so we have ample room and they aren't looking at the backside of the next rig just past their awning.

After we got set up, we drove to the visitor center to check out the programs and hikes. We also made reservations for the Rainbow Tour (free) for tomorrow at 9 a.m., so we'll get an introduction to the park that way.

We played Mexican Train with Dennis and Cheryl with their new game set, which includes a roundhouse where the double domino for the round is placed. When you press that domino, you hear the train whistle and chug out of the station. We started at double 12 and went to double 7, leaving the rest for another day.
