We left Statesville this morning and started towards Hendersonville, south of Asheville, where Todd's RV and Marine is located. After only a few miles on I-40, a low coolant warning message popped up. Of course we immediately thought of the possibility that our interlude in the culvert might have damaged the radiator. We pulled off at the next exit ramp and pulled into an Exxon station--the only one in sight.
Ken got out the manual and read a stern warning that the coolant cap should never be removed even partially if the engine is hot. We lifted the hood and tried to see how hot the coolant reservoir was. About this time a young man came over and offered his help. He had a Silverado 3500 Duramax dually just like ours--and he was an auto service mechanic. He removed the cap and suggested that the thing to do was just put in water to bring the level up, since it wasn't very low at all. He said that's what he does.
We decided that our guardian angel must be working overtime!
When we got to Todd's RV, we talked to Phil, the service advisor who had suggested that we could come in and see if there were any cancellations. After he finished with the previous customer, he checked and decided he could spare a mechanic to look at the water heater. An hour later, with a new ECO and T-Stat installed, the water heater was working fine. We thanked Phil for fitting us in and the mechanic for fixing our problem expeditiously--and our guardian angel.
Ken called Lake Powhatan campground, where we had a reservation to arrive on Saturday and asked if we could get in today. They said no problem, so we moved in to site 21. Tomorrow we'll explore the area some.
One of the guys at Todd's looked at the air conditioner and said the coils were remarkably clean and the air separation looked good. He agreed that keeping the vents closed could lead to freezing up.
