We love to visit waterfalls, and there are plenty around Asheville to visit. We also wanted to drive along at least part of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Fortunately, our campground is very near an entrance to the Parkway.
We drove first to the main Visitor Center to learn something about the Parkway and to get some recommendations on waterfalls/hikes. We decided to take a ride south on the Parkway and stop at some overlooks before continuing on to Dupont State Forest to bag some waterfalls.
We stopped at several overlooks with spectacular panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Parkway also features many interesting stone tunnels.
Spectacular view!
French Broad River started out as the Broad River.....
We left the Parkway near Brevard and drove to the Dupont State Forest. On the way we stopped to see Looking Glass Falls, a lovely high single drop which is visible from the highway.

At the Dupont Forest, we parked at the High Falls parking lot and hiked in to see three waterfalls: High Falls, Triple Falls, and Hooker Falls. Each was different--all were spectacular. We also walked a side trail to the Covered Bridge which overlooks High Falls. Altogether it was a wonderful way to spend a birthday!

My favorite photographer!
We got home tired and hungry, so we had a quick supper of chicken sausage sandwiches and roasted red pepper tomato soup with coleslaw. Then we made our plans for tomorrow. We decided that rather than drive over an hour north on the Parkway to visit Linville Falls, we would visit the North Carolina Arboretum, which is right near the campground and highly rated.
